General questions

For backlist indexing, or if you want to bypass the extended editorial workflow available in OJS and just use it as a publishing tool, articles can be added by using the Quick Submit plugin.

In contrast to OJS 2.4*, the OJS 3 Default theme does not display the content of Journal Summary on the journal start page, but only in the list of journals in the site-wide index. Please use the field “Additional content” for any content you want to include on the journal front page. If you want the information entered in “Additional content” to be displayed at the top of the page, before the “Current issue” section, you can switch to the “Default + LU mods” theme.

The display of “Current issue” on the front page is governed by the theme. The Default theme displays the element, as do the Bootstrap and Manuscript themes. In OJS 3, there is currently no toggle in the administration interface to disable this. However, if you badly want to hide the current issue from being displayed on the front page, you can upload a CSS file in “Settings” –> “Website” –> “Appearance” –> “Journal style sheet” containing this text snippet:

.page_index_journal .current_issue { display: none; }

By checking “Items can only be submitted by Editors and Section Editors” on all available sections (“Settings” –> “Journal” –> “Sections”), users with role “author” will get a message about the submission being closed if they try to start a submission.

In “Users” –> “Site Access Options” –> “User Registration”, it is possible to turn off user registration.

In “Settings” –> “Workflow” –> “Submission”, you can edit the author guidelines and submission checklist to reflect a non-OJS workflow for handling submissions. Also the information field “For Authors” (“Settings” –> “Website” –> “Information”) can be updated with such information.

It is also possible to remove the submission element from the menu, as well as the block to the right with “Make a Submission” (“Settings” –> “Website” –> “Plugins”).

See “Settings” –> “Website” –> “Languages”, and uncheck (UI/Submission/Forms) for every language that you don’t need.

DOI is a permanent identification number that ensures permanent links to, for example, articles. Through OJS, journals can assign DOIs and export metadata. Contact the OJS support at your faculty library or the University Library to get started.

About the OJS 3 upgrade

Due to a mapping issue in the upgrade script, images from the previous version are unfortunately not migrated to the OJS 3 logo field. Please re-upload your logo in “Settings” –> “Website” –> “Appearance” –> “Logo” after the upgrade.

The Static Pages Plugin has been ported to OJS 3, and any static pages have been migrated for your journal. However, the URLs have been changed and no longer have the “pages/view/” prefix in the path. So if you for instance had a static page, its new URL in OJS 3 will be

Since the menu part of OJS has been rewritten, you need to add the extra pages to the menu in “Settings” –> “Website” –> “Navigation menu” for your static pages to show up in OJS 3. Use the “Remote URL” option.

OJS 3 introduced new, more flexible, navigation menu customisation features. To edit your menus, please go to “Settings” –> “Website” –> “Navigation menus”. “Primary” is the main menu (“User” is the user login/administration menu at the very top of the page).

Please edit the field “About the Journal” in “Settings” –> “Journal”.

Normally, this field has been populated with data from several About fields (such as “Focus and Scope”, “Peer Review Process”, etc.) in the previous version, but if there were no custom data before, the field is left empty.

There is unfortunately a bug in the current version of OJS which prevents the subscription administration to be displayed in the administration pages. However, subscription accounts have been migrated, and the following workaround lets you edit subscriptions: Activate Payments in “Settings” –> “Distribution” –> “Payments”. A new menu item “Payments” will appear, from which you can navigate to the subscription settings.
