To obtain funding for research the Swedish Research Council requires recipients of research grants to publish their results freely accessible for everyone.

The demand includes/covers: peer-reviewed articles and conference contributions. Monographs and book chapters are not included.

Allowed embargo: articles must be freely available no later than 6 months after publication date.

When: articles must be freely available no later than 6 months after publication date.

How to make your article freely available I: Publishing in Open Access or hybrid journals. The Lund University Library Head Office administers a central fund for publication fees in Open Access journals published by BioMed Central, PLoS and Hindawi. Additional information available here. If the journal in question is an Open Access journal but published by other publisher than those mentioned contact the Head Office. Hybrid journals are journals financed by subscription fees that also offer a possibility for authors to make their individual articles freely available by charging the author a publication fee. Most major publishers offer this possibility for some or all of their journals.
Funds available through Lund University do not cover publication in hybrid journals. Extra funding for publication fees can however be granted by The Swedish Research Council if researchers include this cost in their grant applications.

How to make your article freely available II: Self-archiving. A copy of the article can be made available in LUP, the open archive at Lund University. Approximately 50 % of publishers registered in the SHERPA/RoMEO database allow self-archiving. Usually publishers permit authors to deposit their final manuscript, approved and corrected, in a repository.

Responsibility: It is the responsibility of the head of department to make sure researchers follow stated terms.

Follow-up: If researchers apply for prolonged funding the Swedish Research Council may check that the terms have been followed.
